Hello friends! Today we decided to raise the topic of the good old VPS-constructor and answer some questions that most often come to our technical support. The topic is interesting, so let's not beat around the bush, let's start.
They say VPS and VDS are different things.
It just so happened that by VDS, some users mean completely isolated machines (which, in general, is true), and by VPS - containers. If anyone doesn't know, a container is a solution in which different virtual machines use shared computing resources, a disk, a single OS. Such a solution costs less, but there is no need to wait for super performance, plus the user does not have root rights.
But no! VPS is not a container. VPS is VDS. It's just a matter of definition.
VPS, Virtual Private Server - Virtual Private Server
VDS, Virtual Dedicated Server - Virtual Dedicated Server
The first term came to us from the English-speaking Internet, the second - was formed in the Russian-speaking environment (from the name of the once popular domestic panel VDSManager) and is not used in the West.
Otherwise, there is no difference between VPS and VDS. They are the same thing - a virtual machine with independent resources.
Well, if you are still tormented by doubts, take a look at what they write about this on the most popular information-scooped resource of the Runet technical customer service.
VPS / VDS or other types of hosting
With the myth sorted out. Now a few words about the distinguishing features of a virtual dedicated server compared to most other types of hosting.
Full control. Working with VPS / VDS, the user gets complete freedom of action inside the server (access level: root / administrator). He can reinstall the OS, create new users, grant them rights and allocate resources.
Scalability. Unlike a physical dedicated server, in the case of a VPS / VDS, additional resources can be easily added, and the extra ones, on the contrary, can be removed. No wonder we at Tucha.ua call this service a VPS-constructor.
Independence. Each virtual machine has a guaranteed amount of resources (processor power, RAM), and no virtual "neighbors" can pull anything over themselves.
You can read more about other types of hosting in one of our previous publications.
Where to use?
As for the application, a virtual dedicated server is great for both small and large-scale projects. For example, you can place on VPS / VDS:
Corporate website;
mail server;
telephony;
web application;
virtual office.
